Butterknopfchen

There’s something truly special about homemade pastries that fill your home with a warm and inviting aroma. In this recipe, I’m excited to share with you a delightful treat that hails from my grandmother’s corner bakery – Butterknopfchen. These delectable little pastries are perfect for Sunday brunch, afternoon tea, or whenever you’re craving a delightful sweet treat. With a buttery and flaky exterior and a sweet jam filling, Butterknopfchen is sure to become a favorite in your home too.

**Butterknopfchen**

**Ingredients:**
– 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
– 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
– 1/2 cup granulated sugar
– 1/4 teaspoon salt
– 1 large egg
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 1/2 cup fruit jam of your choice
– Powdered sugar for dusting

**Instructions:**
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the chilled diced butter using a pastry cutter or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

3. In a small bowl, whisk the egg and vanilla extract together. Pour this mixture into the flour and butter mixture. Mix until the dough comes together. It might look a bit crumbly, but that’s okay.

4. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently until it forms a smooth ball. Wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 30 minutes to firm up the dough.

5. Once chilled, take the dough out and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness. Using a round cookie cutter or the rim of a glass, cut out circles from the dough.

6. Place the circles on the prepared baking sheet. Add a teaspoon of fruit jam in the center of each circle. Fold the edges of the dough inward to create a button-like shape, leaving some of the jam peeking through the top.

7. Bake the Butterknopfchen in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until they turn a light golden brown around the edges.

8. Remove the pastries from the oven and allow them to cool on a wire rack. Once cooled, dust the tops with powdered sugar for a sweet finish.

9. Serve these delightful Butterknopfchen alongside a cup of tea or coffee, and savor the flaky crust and fruity center with each delightful bite.

You can store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. However, they’re best enjoyed fresh from the oven when the buttery aroma fills your kitchen.

Enjoy making these Butterknopfchen for your loved ones or simply as a treat for yourself. They are sure to bring a touch of homemade goodness to your day. Let the simplicity and warmth of these pastries enchant your senses and brighten your day.
